The swing moves gently and instantly the music starts to play and the lights turn on and off in time to the motion and the sound. Halfway between street furniture and a game for interested passers-by on the Promenade des Artistes in the Quartier des Spectacles, 21 Balançoires (21 interactive swings) line the street, free for passing pedestrians to use, presenting a unique and poetic experience incorporating music and light.
Designed and constructed by Montreal designers Mouna Andraos and Melissa Mongiat, the 7 swing sets, each with three swings, play classical music to the rhythm controlled by the swinging motion of the occupants of the swings, and which, at night time, creates an intriguing dance of music and light.
ESKI created and integrated the interactive system used in 21 Balançoires. A bundle of sensors track the height, the speed and the position of the swings, which allow the system to play back the notes of the music according to the swinging motion. The bottoms of the seats of the swings house an LED lighting system that lights up as the seats move.
